USDA Launches High Tunnel Pilot Study

Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan announces a new pilot project under the 'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' initiative for farmers to establish high tunnels to increase the availability of locally grown produce in a conservation-friendly way.

Kansas is one of 38 states in the 3-year pilot study that will help determine if high tunnels are effective in reducing pesticide use, keeping vital nutrients in the soil, extending the growing season, increasing yields, and providing other benefits to growers.

Kansas Receives Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program Funds

Kansas NRCS has received $1.2 million for the Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP) for Fiscal Year 2010. All proposals submitted to the Kansas NRCS State Office prior to February 15, 2010, will be reviewed for funding consideration.
