2002 Kansas Report
Plant Materials (PM)
Responsibility for plant science activities of the NRCS is a
primary function of the PM Program. The Manhattan Plant Materials Center (PMC)
is one of a national network of plant centers dedicated to providing vegetative
solutions to conservation problems. The Center serves a diverse region of the
heartland including Kansas, Nebraska, northern Oklahoma, and eastern Colorado.
The mission of the PM Program is to develop and transfer
effective state-of-the-art plant science technology to meet customer and resource
needs.
The primary products produced by the PM Program include:
- the production of improved varieties of plants for use in
addressing resource needs and in supporting NRCS programs, and
- the development of plant technology for incorporation into the
Field Office Technical Guide for addressing identified resource concerns is as
follows: soil erosion and sediment control, 40 percent; riparian, 9 percent;
outreach, 2 percent; native species, 16 percent; invasive species, 2 percent;
grazing land conservation, 9 percent; buffers, 5 percent; nutrient management, 3
percent; critical area treatment 3 percent; wetland and wildlife conservation,

percent.
