Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D)

RC&D encourages and improves the capability of civic leaders in designated RC&D areas to plan and carry out projects for resource conservation and community development.  Program objectives focus on "quality of life" improvements achieved through natural resources conservation and community development.

Kansas has eight authorized RC&D areas and has submitted two RC&D area applications for consideration during the next approval period.  The pending RC&D areas are Solomon Valley (Graham, Norton, Osborne, Phillips, Rooks, and Smith counties) and Coronado Crossing (Clark, Ford, Gray, Haskell, Hodgeman, Meade, and Seward counties).

The State Association of Kansas RC&D Councils (SAKRCDC) activities this year included:

  • Working in a collaborative effort with the State Conservation Commission, Kansas Association of Conservation Districts, and the NRCS to bring Board Development Training to all conservation district supervisors, RC&D councils members, and NRCS personnel. Over 450 people attended five training sessions in early 2002.
  • Assuming leadership of the Kansas Coalition for Carbon Management.
  • Supporting the formation of two RC&D councils that await approval from the Secretary of Agriculture. The SAKRCDC will target the remaining 32 Kansas counties to be represented by RC&D councils by 2005.
