Geology Information and Maps

by Larry R. Sabata, Soil Scientist
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
Topeka, Kansas

For school program presentations, such as Envirothons, the science of geology provides one of the building blocks of information to students in learning about the environment. To assist teachers and others who present basics of geology, an excellent web site at http://geology.about.com/cs/escibasics/ provides a wealth of information on geology and other related topics of interest to young students. In addition to basic geology, this site contains links to specific subject fields such as dinosaurs, fossils, rocks and minerals, glaciers, water and hydrology, and even geology on other planets.

This site is not just for students and teachers. For the working professional, it also contains links to the state geologic maps of all 50 states, as well as links to other sites which explain how to read and interpret geologic maps and topographic maps.

I encourage everyone to check out http://geology.about.com/cs/escibasics/. It is one for the bookmark!
