Residue Management: Residue Management: Managing the
amount, distribution and orientation of crop residues on the soil
surface reduces erosion, conserves soil moisture and improves soil
carbon. |

Kansas Landscape: A typical landscape view of Kansas
croplands reveals contour terraces, contour farming, and field
windbreaks. These practices help reduce the damaging effects of water
runoff from high intensity storms and they help reduce wind speed at the
soil surface which robs soil moisture and increases water loss through
evaporation. Trees in windbreaks and riparian areas can provide
important corridors for wildlife travel. These travel lanes allow some
wildlife species, like white-tailed deer, access to critical food,
cover, and water. When properly managed, woody cover can also provide
escape for upland game birds and nesting sites for song birds. |

Irrigation Water Management: Manages soil moisture,
optimizes available water supplies and minimizes erosion by controlling
the volume, rate and timing of irrigation water in a planned and
efficient manner. |
