Kansas Landscape Kansas Landscape: A typical landscape view of Kansas croplands reveals contour terraces, contour farming, and field windbreaks. These practices help reduce the damaging effects of water runoff from high intensity storms and they help reduce wind speed at the soil surface which robs soil moisture and increases water loss through evaporation. Trees in windbreaks and riparian areas can provide important corridors for wildlife travel. These travel lanes allow some wildlife species, like white-tailed deer, access to critical food, cover, and water. When properly managed, woody cover can also provide escape for upland game birds and nesting sites for song birds. Calendar - June 2012
