Secretary Johanns to Hold Farm Bill Form at Kansas State Fair

When: September 12, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: 4-H Encampment Building, Dillon Auditorium,
Kansas State Fairgrounds

Bill R. Fuller, state executive director of USDA's Kansas Farm Service Agency announced that Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns will conduct a Farm Bill Forum at the Kansas State Fair.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Kansas farmers, ranchers and agricultural organizations to offer comments on farm bill policy," said Fuller. "We encourage those affected by USDA policy to attend this event and have a voice in the development of the next farm bill."

The Farm Bill Forum will be held on Monday, September 12, 2005, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Dillon Hall in the Encampment Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds, Hutchinson, Kansas. Admission to the State Fair this day is only one dollar.

The public is invited to attend this event. In the desire to hear from a large number of guests and a broad range of issues, each will be limited to 2 minutes of oral comments. Participants shall prepare their comments to respond to one or more of the following six questions:

  1. How should farm policy address any unintended consequences and ensure that such consequences do not discourage new farmers and the next generation of farmers from entering production agriculture?
  2. How should farm policy be designed to maximize U.S. competitiveness and our country's ability to effectively compete in global markets?
  3. How should farm policy be designed to effectively and fairly distribute assistance to producers?
  4. How can farm policy best achieve conservation and environmental goals?
  5. How can Federal rural and farm programs provide effective assistance in rural areas?
  6. How should agricultural product development, marketing and research-related issues be addressed in the next farm bill?

The public is also welcome to submit their comments via the USDA Farm Bill Forums website.

Media Advisory: Secretary Johanns will hold a press conference at 9:30 a.m. prior to the forum.  Media must have credential and sign-in upon arrival.
