Subject: Wildlife Watering Facility Options
A wildlife watering facility provides drinking water for wildlife by the
construction, improvement, or modification of watering places for wildlife. In
determining if a wildlife watering facility is needed, it must be determined if
there is already a watering facility on site and if so, does it meet the needs
of the targeted species.
For CRP, adequate water will exist for pheasants, quail, and prairie chicken
at the rate of one source for each 160 acres.
There is also a potential that this practice may impact wetlands, waters of
the United States, or Kansas Division of Water Resources jurisdictional areas. A
determination of no adverse impact should be obtained before the practice is
implemented (following the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
conservation planning policy).
Attached are wildlife watering facility design options that meet Kansas NRCS
Practice Standard 648, Wildlife Watering Facility. Note: Attachment 3 is an
example of wildlife watering facility options in Texas. The notes to non
cost-share facilities and cost shareable facilities are not applicable to
Kansas.
