Subject: Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds

Field borders should be seeded according to Practice Standard 645 (Upland Wildlife Habitat Management). The CP 15B (grassed terraces) mix in Technical Guidance Number 38 dated May 15, 2004, should be utilized, as the preferred mix with the CP2 option 2 mix the next alternative as these are the optimum grassland bird seeding mixes developed in cooperation with Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. It is encouraged that only native species be utilized in field border seedings.

Shrubs may comprise up to 10 percent of the approved practice cover and should be planted according to Standard 612 (Tree/Shrub Establishment). Again, only native species are encouraged. Trees will not be planted in field borders.
