Arikaree Watershed

Watershed Description

The Arikaree Watershed is located in extreme northwest Kansas in Cheyenne county.  It also has portions in Dundy county Nebraska and Lincoln, Kit Carson, Elbert, Washington, and Yuma counties in Colorado.

Land features consist of broad, level to gently rolling plains.  Soils are well-drained and medium textured.

Predominant land use is cropland, both dryland small grain and irrigated corn and sorghum.  Other land uses include rangeland consisting of short grass prairie and Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres.

Primary resource concerns are soil erosion, soil compaction, and poor soil condition due to low organic matter on cropland.  Plant health is the key resource concern on the rangeland.

Key wildlife habitat includes cropland, rangeland, weedy and brushy fence rows, riparian areas, streams, and wetlands.  Key wildlife species include ring-necked pheasants and mule deer.

Watershed Statistics

The total estimated area (Kansas) in the watershed is 22,076 acres.  Cropland covers about 1,793 acres, and grassland covers about 20,283 acres.
