Delaware Watershed

Watershed Description

The Delaware Watershed is located in northeast Kansas and is comprised of portions of Atchison, Brown, Jackson, Jefferson, Nemaha, and Shawnee counties.

Land features consist of level to nearly level broad glacial plains dissected by deep drainage ways.  The valley bottoms are narrow with steep side slopes.  Soils are deep with high clay content.

Land uses are an intermixture of cropland, rangeland, and pasture land.  Primary crops include corn, sorghum, and soybeans with resource concerns consisting of soil erosion, soil compaction, and poor soil condition due to low organic matter.  Rangeland consists of tallgrass prairie with plant health being a primary resource concern.  Pasture land consists of improved, cool-season perennial grasses with production being the primary resource concern.

Key wildlife habitat includes cropland, rangeland, weedy and brushy fence rows, ungrazed odd areas, riparian areas, streams, and wetlands.  Key wildlife species include ring-necked pheasants, bobwhite quail, and whitetail deer.
