Lower Little Blue Watershed

Watershed Description

The Lower Little Blue Watershed is located in Fillmore, Saline, Thayer, Jefferson and Gage counties in southern Nebraska extending into Republic, Washington, and Marshall counties in Kansas.

Land features range from rolling plains to nearly broad level plains dissected with narrow drainage ways.  Soils are predominately silty clay loams underlain by thick beds of loess.

Predominate land use is cropland with wheat, corn, soybean, and sorghum being the principle crops.  Primary resource concerns consist of soil erosion, soil compaction, and poor soil condition due to low organic matter.  Grasslands are the second predominant land use and consist primarily of tall grass native plants.  The primary resource concerns on grassland are poor plant health and vigor, and brush encroachment of undesirable species.

Key wildlife habitat includes cropland, rangeland, weedy and brushy fence rows, ungrazed areas, riparian areas, streams, and wetlands.  Key wildlife species include ring-necked pheasants, greater prairie chicken, bobwhite quail, and whitetail deer.  Resource concerns for wildlife include inadequate food, cover/shelter, water, space, and plant health.

Watershed Statistics

The total estimated area in the Kansas portion of the watershed is 562,729 acres.  Cropland covers about 311,224 acres, and grassland covers about 244,871 acres.
