Lower Salt Fork Watershed

Watershed Description

The Lower Salt Fork Watershed is located in Barber and Harper counties in south central Kansas extending into Alfalfa, Garfield, Grant, Kay, and Noble counties in Oklahoma.

Over 92 percent of the land area is devoted to agriculture, with the remaining 8 percent in rural farm communities and other land uses.

The primary resource concerns include soil erosion (sheet, rill, and gully) increases in soil acidity, saline seeps, sedimentation, and declining soil organic matter.

Wildlife habitat has improved over time due to CRP and interested managers, but the habitat components are broken up by large expanses of monoculture cropland.  Key wildlife species include whitetail deer and ring-necked pheasant.

Watershed Statistics

The total estimated area in the Kansas portion of the watershed is 263,260 acres.  Cropland covers about 110,766 acres, and grassland covers about 148,447 acres.
