North Fork Ninnescah Watershed

Watershed Description

The North Fork Ninnescah Watershed is located in southcentral Kansas and is comprised of portions of Kingman, Kiowa, Pratt, Reno, Sedgwick, and Stafford counties.

Land features range from narrow, undulating to rolling hills and valleys consisting of sand dunes stabilized by native grasses to level alluvial plains.  Soils range from deep sands to fine, sandy loams.

The predominant land use is cropland, with small grains, irrigated corn, and alfalfa being the primary crops.  The primary resource concern on cropland is soil erosion.  Rangeland is the dominant land use and consists of the tallgrass prairie.

Key wildlife habitat includes cropland, good and excellent rangeland, weedy and brushy fence rows and ungrazed odd areas, riparian areas, streams, and wetlands.  Key wildlife species include ring-necked pheasants, bobwhite quail, and whitetail deer.
