Lower South Fork Solomon WatershedWatershed DescriptionThe Lower South Fork Solomon Watershed is located in northcentral Kansas and is comprised of portions of Rooks, Osborne, Mitchell, and Smith counties. There are 562 farms within the watershed. Land features are comprised predominantly of broad, level to gently rolling plains that are dissected by narrow drainage ways and river valleys. Soils are deep, well drained, and medium to fine textured. This is a major dryland farming area. Winter wheat and grain sorghum are the principal crops. Corn, alfalfa, small grains, and hay are the principal crops grown under irrigation. Predominant native vegetation consists of mixed grass prairie species. Watershed StatisticsThe total estimated area in the watershed is 680,251 acres. Cropland covers about 233,356 acres, and grassland covers about 433,795 acres.
