Spring WatershedWatershed DescriptionApproximately 20 percent of the Spring Watershed is located in southeast Kansas and is comprised of portions of Crawford and Cherokee counties. It also has portions in southwestern Missouri. The watershed covers portions of Barry, Barton, Christian, Dade, Jasper, Lawrence, and Newton counties in Missouri; and Ottawa County in northeastern Oklahoma. Land features consist of one continuous low relief upland plain with little local relief, broad stream valleys, and claypan soils. There are 588 farms within the Kansas portion of the watershed. The primary land use is dryland farming with winter wheat, soybeans, corn, grain sorghum, and alfalfa being the principal crops grown. The rest of the area is predominately pastureland with small remnants of tall grass prairie found on the steeper areas. Woodlands are confined to wet bottom land along major stream courses. Watershed StatisticsThe total estimated area in the Kansas portion of the watershed is 285,938 acres. Cropland covers about 68,893 acres, and grassland covers about 153,137 acres.
