Rehabilitation - Switzler Creek Watershed Dam Site #7
Introduction
This
dam rehabilitation project will create or save jobs, protect lives, property,
and local water supplies, and put the dam in compliance with current safety
standards.
Project Description
- Location: Osage County, 2nd Congressional District
- Federal Funding: $1,135,000
- Sponsor Funding: $343,000
This project will rehabilitate the dam's deteriorating principal spillway and
remove sediment from its nearly-full sediment pool. The project will extend the
dam's life for an additional 50 to 100 years.

Benefits
Rehabilitation of this dam will protect from floods the 150 people who live
in its 5-square-mile drainage area, residents of the City of Burlingame, and
travelers along Kansas Highway 56. Homes, agricultural lands, railroads,
highways, and bridges will also be protected.

Economic Opportunities
This rehabilitation project will create or save jobs and provide nearly
$50,000 in annual flood damage reduction benefits.
Statewide Perspective
In 2007, small watershed dams in Kansas provided $44.6 million in annual
benefits, including reductions in soil erosion and protection of water supplies,
agricultural land, roads, and bridges.
